The ‘Sea Provides A Simple Recipe: Designing Perceptions

Fellow SF BBer Chelsea, drummer of VanWave (who recently released their first EP V A N W A V E) guided us through a brief talk and an interactive breakfast about our perceptions of ourselves and how we’d want to be perceived. She then dropped a quick recipe to help us distill the essential flavors of our image.
Taste it out.

Chelsea’s Perception Breakfast Recipe

1. Who are you? (How would you describe yourself, or your musician alter ego?)

2. Write down 3 adjectives describing how you see yourself.

  1. __________
  2. __________
  3. __________

3.Write down 3 adjectives describing how others see you. (ask around, or what you’ve heard people say, or what you think others think)

  1. __________
  2. __________
  3. __________

4. Write down the 3 ideal adjectives that you’d want people to be using to describe you.

  1. __________
  2. __________
  3. __________

5. Write down your 3 MAJOR influences.

  1. __________
  2. __________
  3. __________

6. Write down your 3 GREATEST assets.

  1. __________
  2. __________
  3. __________

7. Use this simple guide as your foundation as you gather images, videos, books, quotes, anything else you find inspiring and would like to make a part of your image.

Focus on:

1. Aligning your visuals with how your music sounds (if that’s what you’re aiming for), and
2. Paying attention to the words you use to describe your music (in blog posts, in speech, etc.) with how it actually sounds (both in a studio recording as well as in a live setting).

*A great tool Chelsea suggested using for step #7 (and that she uses herself) is Pinterest. Use it to create mood boards, brainstorm with your visuals/words, and ultimately design the most intuitively accurate vision and version of yourself.

Receive the treat, and you’ll walk steadily to your melody.
